Day 6 - August 10, 2018
“Open your eyes to new perspectives.”
Even if you’re looking at the same thing for a long time, it will look new from another point-of-view. There are times when we get blinded by how we look at something and never erasing our impression of it. But when we open our eyes to new perspectives, we might see much more than we thought there is. This is just a random thought that entered my mind when riding the Ferris wheel in Phrom Khiri.
Gate Duty!
First day in Gate Duty! The Gate Duty is not really hard, the challenge lies in waking up much earlier than usual and preparing yourself to welcome everyone who comes in your designated gate. Our schedule on a normal day usually starts at 8:00 in the morning and ends at 4:15 (16:15) in the afternoon, but whenever I have gate duty, I have to be in school before 7:30. Thai culture has a different way of greeting each other. They do the “wai” by vowing your head like a nod and putting both palms together, the level depends on the person you are doing the “wai” to, as for me, I welcome students, parents and teachers that’s why the level is just infront your breast to your lips. After that, since we are foreign teachers, we usually still greet them in English, “Goodmorning”. It’s normal to see children having powder marks on their faces, when I asked what it meant, the teacher said it helps in boosting their confidence and to make them look good.
Welcome to the Future! It's 2561!
Since Thailand is a Buddhist country, they follow a different calendar. Instead of 2018, their year is 2561!
Celebration for the Birthday of the Queen
For this day, everyone is encouraged to wear blue as a tribute for the Queen’s birthday. The students were dressed in costumes as they would perform later on in the Big Hall. The event lasted for the whole morning and classes were resumed after the lunch break. We had lunch in a cafeteria where I ordered Nom Yen which eventually my favorite drink so far!

Chaosuan Fair (Annual Festival) in Phrom Khiri District
We met our Thai Buddies when we arrived and had several dinner with them, but this time, they invited us to go to a Festival. It excites us since it will be our first time to go out of the campus, except when going to the nearby night market. NSTRU is found in Muang District and the festival was located in another district which is Phrom Khiri. It was similar to what Filipinos know as “perya” whenever the town is celebrating a festival. We had fun in the game booths and stores where we bought some souvenirs to bring back home. Of course, it won’t be complete without buying some food and delicacies we haven’t tasted.
