Day 7 - August 11, 2018
"I'm gonna break down these walls I built around myself."
Walls by All Time Low
When we went to the Old City Wall of Nakhon Si Thammarat, I remembered a similar place in the Philippines, the Intramuros Ruins in Manila. I wonder what it was like to be in a walled city, forbidden to go out. Then I realized that we often to that to ourselves. We usually build walls around ourselves either to preserve what we have inside or to protect it from the dangers outside. But biologically speaking, our bodies aren’t made like that. Our cells, the basic unit of life, have semi-permeable membranes (or walls as analogy) that permits other substances to go in and out our system, we just need to constantly check and make sure that we won’t regret what we let go and be careful to what we allow to enter.
First time in Sahathai Plaza
For our first weekend here in Nakhon Si Thammarat, our Thai Buddies rented a Song Thaew (we paid 60 Baht each as contribution) for our whole day tour around the city. City was still a ten to fifteen-minute drive from the university but we enjoyed the ride with our friends in the “two-lined car” facing each other.
We went to Sahathai Plaza (they pronounce it as “Sah-Thai”), bought some stuff and ate lunch in FoodForRest food court. We then went to several other markets where we bought some necessities for the rest of our stay and also souvenirs.
Buddhist Temple and Central Night Market
After that, we went to a temple where we had to wear something like a lab gown (what we use to wear in laboratories) and remove our shoes before entering. I enjoyed it when we spent some time in the corner of the temple where three gongs were placed. I sat there, trying to make them ring but nothing happened. Our Thai Buddies told us that if you made it ring, you are believed to be a good person.
It’s amazing how one of them, Sandy, could make it ring in just a matter of few minutes.
Outside the temple, street shows were present. There were bands playing with various instruments. Others were performing acts, one of them featured a girl dancing and singing with a majestic voice.
The Old City Wall
As dusk approached, we went to visit the Old City Wall where we rested after a very tiring day. We got to take a lot of photos and had small talks about random topics.
